7 Signs You Need to Upgrade Your Roof’s Ventilation System

Roof Ventilation Systems — Wilmington, DE — Brandywine Exteriors

Roof ventilation systems are important when it comes to extending a roof’s lifespan. Having the proper amount of intake and exhaust vents will lessen the burden on a home’s roofing material. The opposite is true if the roof ventilation is not up to the job.

A roof without the proper amount of attic ventilation will trap hot air which can cause all types of avoidable problems.

How Much Ventilation Does a Roof Need?

Every roof requires a ventilation system that works to circulate air and reduce moisture levels in the attic. Just as you furnaces and air conditioning systems need to have the right amount of capability to cover the entire home, an attic’s ventilation system needs to be adequate for the space it covers.

The FHA recommends at least 1 square foot of ventilation for every 300 square feet of attic space. Position the intake vents strategically positioned above the eave, also known as the soffit. While the exhaust vents should be installed close to the roof’s peaks.

Caution: too much ventilation can be a hazard, as well

While vents are necessary, too many leave you more vulnerable to leaks, can cause a blow out during a hurricane or worse. The amount of vents you need will also vary depending on the roof’s slope and size of the attic space. It is best to consult with an experienced professional.
